The festival of Candlemas got its name from the Latin “Festa Candelarum” meaning the “Festival of  candles”.

The Celts used to celebrate Imbolc on February 1st.  This rite, in honor of the goddess Brigit, celebrated purification and fertility after the winter. The peasants would carry torches, walking through the fields in procession, praying the goddess to purify the earth before sowing.

The pancakes we make at Candlemas, with their round shape and their golden color,  allude to the Sun, finally back after the winter night, a time of year when the days get quickly longer.  It was also around that time of year that the winter sowing would begin while the excess flour was used to make these pancakes,  a symbol of prosperity for the year to come.

February, on the other hand, takes its name from the Latin verb “februare” which means "to purify".  This is probably why, in the Christian calendar,  the Purification of the Virgin is celebrated at that time. The purification corresponds to the end of the “winter darkness”(candelaria).

It is a moment of regeneration, a time where all the terrestrial energies invite you to come out of the darkness and to renew your internal forces to manifest light and prosperity.
